2019 The Hilt Chardonnay Musqué

In 2010, we began to take notice of a mutation in the chardonnay vines in one of the blocks we farm. These few vines, while still definitely chardonnay, ripened smaller berries that achieved a more golden hue, but most importantly they took on a "musky" flavor and perfumed aromatics. We began to take cuttings from these vines and eventually transplanted them (via several years in our nursery) into an entire acre at Radian Vineyard. This corner of Radian is located high on an eastern plateau that consists completely of low vigor diatomaceous soils. The unique combination of terroir and plant material gave us something impossible to ignore. The wines are lifted, tropical, floral, perfumed, and full of green citrus and honeysuckle. They are built around a core of eye-opening acidity and a fine and dusty DE-driven structure. They demanded a bottling from our first harvest in 2018 and their unique and precise build ignited our desire to seek out other singular flavors and textures found on our properties. This wine is not just a single vineyard wine. This is a single corner of a few rows in a single vineyard block within the larger Radian property. The search for distinct voices from the far corners of our property continues in earnest today. There is nothing else in the world like these Musqué bottles. - Matt Dees, Winemaker
